Fine lines and wrinkles appear because of irregular thickening of the dermis , a reduction in new skin cell production and a decrease in the amount of water held by the epidermis. They can also accumulate due to environmental damage caused by smoking, sunlight, pollutants in the air and to a degree are related to genetic skin structure. 

Deeper lines or furrows are more complex and are divided into those that are caused by repeated movement and those that that are static.

A static line is one that has been caused by dynamic movement over time. The depletion of Collagen and bony loss are also contributing factors.

There is a fine line (forgive the pun) to walk between minimising lines and eradicating all expression and appearing glass like.
